Jensen suggested that this is "a fine example of the second generation Nazarenes", Circle of Wilhelm von Schadow, with further direction to Julius Hubner (Dusseldorf 1806-82) and possibly Alfred Rethel (circa 1840). Bailey suggested Heinrich Schwemminger (1803-1884), circa 1830-40.
